MBBS Admission Process in Tamil Nadu: Overview
The Tamil Nadu MBBS Admission Process is based on NEET-UG and online counselling by the Selection Committee under the Directorate of Medical Education and Research. Applicants should apply through the official Tamil Nadu medical selection portal, submit documents, fill choices, and follow the allotment process as applicable.
For 2026–27, counselling covers government quota, management quota, minority, and NRI routes. MBBS/BDS counselling of these categories is being done by the official Selection Committee. When comparing medical options through State Medical Counselling India, getting clarity on each state's rules, reservation categories, and verification steps ensures well-informed choice filling.

The Tamil Nadu counselling is not related to the All India Quota of MCC. In government medical colleges, 15% of the seats are given to the All India Quota and 85% are given to the state counselling system, with eligibility and reservation regulations.
Government Quota Seats
Government quota comprises state seats in government colleges and government-quota seats in participating self-financing colleges. For 2026–27, Tamil Nadu reported 7,157 MBBS government-quota seats: 4,473 state-quota seats in government medical colleges and 2,684 government-quota seats in self-financing colleges.
Tamil Nadu also maintains its preferential reservation of 7.5% to deserving government-school students.
Self-Financing / Management Quota Seats
Through the state counselling system, management, minority and NRI seats in self-financing medical colleges are allotted. NEET is still mandatory. The 2026–27 prospectus specifically covers management, minority and NRI admissions in self-financing and state private university medical colleges.
