Yes. NRI quota does not override NEET-UG qualification.
NRI Quota Route
MCC & State CounsellingPlanning MBBS admission in India through the NRI quota? This route is documentation-heavy because of eligibility, sponsorship requirements, counselling regulations, and higher fees. Dr Academy India helps families with NRI eligibility and counselling preparation.
Who Qualifies as an NRI Candidate for MBBS?
For 2026–27, MCC states that NRI candidature may apply when the candidate’s mother or father is an NRI ordinarily residing abroad. Even first-degree or nearest blood relatives can be supportive of NRI candidature, but again, with prescribed relationship, guardianship, and documentary restrictions.
If a relative is the sponsor or guardian, you may need evidence to establish the relationship and bona fide guardianship. The fact that a family member resides abroad does not mean they are an NRI.
NEET-UG qualification remains compulsory for NRI MBBS admission.
MBBS NRI Admission Process
The MBBS NRI admission process typically involves:
MCC deals with participating deemed universities and other seats under its platform whereas state authorities deal with NRI seats in their counselling system.
NRI Quota Seats by State/College
The NRI seats are not the same in India. Availability is based on the state, institution, and approved seat matrix. Private, self-financing, and considered medical colleges may offer NRI-category seats.
The state of Kerala, as an example, puts up a different list of NRI category of MBBS/BDS candidates, and only those who are on the list are taken into consideration during NRI allotment, via CEE Kerala.
Sponsorship and Affidavit Requirements
Candidates might require:
- Sponsor’s passport
- Visa or overseas residence proof
- Proof of relationship
- Sponsorship affidavit or undertaking
- Identity documents of candidates and sponsors
- Where applicable, guardianship evidence
According to the MCC 2026 notice, the evidence and legal documents can be requested in cases where NRI candidature relies on a guardian or a qualifying relative.
